Internship Reflection

I developed time management skills, interpersonal/collaborative skills, technical skills, and a stronger understanding of professional expectations in a healthcare organization. I was expected to contribute to ongoing projects, maintain attention to detail, and adapt to a remote, allied work environment.

Through creating social media graphics that aligned with the organization’s established style, I strengthened my ability to communicate messages clearly and professionally. I attended virtual meetings involving multiple departments across the organization. This allowed me to observe the team's dynamic and workflow in order to better understand how decisions are collectively made in a non-profit healthcare organization.

Projects I contributed to include data collection with information gathered from administered surveys, locating missing information from candidates, and and filtering datasets for administrators. I feel these projects strengthened my analytical and organizational skills. I also assisted with website updates and suggested possible corrections which helped reinforce the importance of accuracy and consistency of information being presented to the organization's clientele. I met and often exceeded expectations by completing tasks efficiently, staying open to constructive feedback, and consistently producing work that supported ICAADA's departmental goals. Overall, this experience helped me grow in confidence and professionalism for future roles in healthcare administration.

Academic Connections

I feel that multiple courses offered to me throughout my academic career assisted in preparing me for this internship experience. Courses in particular that come to mind are Professionalism in The Health Care Workplace, Career Preparation, and Health Information Technology Management and Policy. Professionalism in The Health Care Workplace and Career Preparation courses share similar principles that helped me practice email etiquette, and general appropriate behavioral techniques within the workplace of healthcare settings. With these practices in mind, it helped me navigate everyday tasks within my internship that required these thinkings. Health Information Technology Management and Policy placed a huge emphasis on the Microsoft software Excel, which was heavily used throughout my internship experience. This course equipped me with basic functions and knowledge of Excel that supported me with tasks given to me during the time spent at my internship. I genuinely feel like these three courses helped me navigate through my internship successfully based on the assignments provided.
